Saturday saw the first half of the SDA season end with 41 players entering the SDA Shetland Men’s Open Singles competition in the Lerwick Legion. The event also saw a secondary Plate competition run alongside the main competition with players losing in the preliminary and first round automatically being entered into this competition.

The early rounds of the Main Shetland Singles competition were played over the best of 5 legs and following some close games and players coming through difficult sections of the draw where many the well-known players met one another. Following this the quarter finals saw, Michael Eunson beat Stuart Paul, Andrew Simpson bt Craig Smith, Philip Mowat defeat Tommy Williamson 4-2 and Craig Main bt Neal Redfern 4-1.

The Semi finals were played over the best of 9 legs and saw Craig Main progress through to his second successive Grand Prix Final with a 5-1 victory over Michael Eunson. The second semi-final saw Philip Mowat claim a 5-2 victory over Andrew Simpson.

The final was played over the best of 11 final and saw Craig emerge with a 6-1 victory over Philip to claim the Shetland Opens Men’s Singles Trophy for the first time.

The Plate Competition featuring the 20 players who had exited the main tournament in the first rounds saw play being over the best of 3 legs right through to the semi-finals producing some exciting quickfire games with the quarter finals seeing Maurice Clark bt Scott Williamson, Stuart Manson beating Keith Hay, Barry Couper defeating David Williamson and Arnold Brown seeing off Ben Ferguson.

The semi-finals were played over the best of 5 legs and saw Maurice Clark progress through to the final with a 3-2 victory over Stuart Manson, Arnold Brown joined Maurice in the final with a narrow 3-2 victory over Barry Couper. The best of 5 leg final produced a very close game with it going to a last leg decider which Maurice took and claim a 3-2 win.
