John Garriock of sponsors Sinclair's Taxis presents the Shetland Open Men's singles trophy to winner Philip Mowat.

Saturday saw the Shetland Open Singles take place in the Lerwick Legion with 50 players entering on the day looking to pick up maximum Intercounty points and be crowned Shetland Singles Champion 2022.

The first rounds produced some very competitive ties and very close games with the winners progressing to later rounds the losers of the preliminary and 1st round dropping into the plate competition.

Following these early rounds in the main competition the quarter finals saw Liam Sutherland beat fellow Delting Boating Club player James Manson 4-0, Whalsay’s Roger Irvine beat Delting Boating Club’s Scott Williamson 4-1, Philip Mowat of the Posties defeated Hamnavoe player Frank Watt 4-1 and Craig Main of the Bar fines beat Ryan Mustard of Nil Point 4-0.

The semi finals were played over the best of 9 legs and saw 2 very high scoring games which saw Liam Sutherland defeat Roger Irvine by 5 legs to 3 hitting 4 180’s along the way to progress through to the Shetland Singles final where he met Philip Mowat After he defeated Craig Main by the same 5-3 score line again with Philip recording two 180’s in his semi final victory.

The final was played over the best of 11 legs and saw the high quality of the semi finals continue into the final were the opening 4 legs were shared between the 2 players before Philip was able to establish a 4-2 lead. Liam claimed the next before Philp’s slightly heavier scoring in the later stages of the final saw him claim the remaining two legs of the final to emerge a 6-3 winner claim the Shetland Men’s Open Singles Champion 2022 title. Philip also added to his 180 tally in the final hitting another 2 during the game.

Running alongside the main open competition ran the plate competition which saw the 25 losers from the first round’s of the main draw compete against one another over the best of 3 legs up until the final.

Once again the first round produced several competitive ties before the quarter finals saw, Stuart Paul beat Willum Gray2-1, Kieran Fraser defeat David Thomson 2-1, Iain Blance beat David John Anderson 2-0 and Neal Redfern edge out John Robert Scott 2-1.

The final was contested by Kieran Fraser and Neal Redfern after both players beat Stuart Paul and Iain Blance respectively, the final was played over the best of 5 legs and saw Kieran run out a 3-0 winner to win the Shetland Open Singles plate competition.

Thanks also goes to the Lerwick Legion for hosting the event, their barstaff for their work during the day, and finally to all the businesses and player’s that donated prizes to the raffle that was held during the day.

During the day’s play 180’s were recorded from Philip Mowat (7), Liam Sutherland (5), Craig Main (2), Stuart Paul (2), John Philip Sandison (2), Scott Williamson (2), Jake Ramsay, Ross Bisset, David Williamson,Ryan Hutchison Marc Henry and Steven Struthers.

The highest checkout during the day went to Roger Irvine finishing 150, others recording 100+ checkouts were Caelan Williamson 101, James Manson 106 & 103, Philip Mowat 100, Kieran Fraser 106, John Robert Scott 125, Frank Watt 109 & Stuart Paul 110.

This Friday sees the Shetland Open Doubles take place in the Whitedale Snooker Club. Players are to be registered for 6:30pm for a 7pm start.
