Charlie "Zoom" Memorial winner Liam Sutherland recieves trophy from Sandwck Social represntative Shona Sandison.

Friday night saw the 1st Grand Prix of 2023, The “Zoom” Memorial shield take place in the Sandwick Social Club with 51 players entering on the night. The early rounds produced some close and competitive games before the quarter finals saw Liam Sutherland edge out Neal Redfern 4-3, Scott Williamson beat Ryan Mustard by 4 legs to 3, Stuart Paul defeat Clive Burgess 4-1 and Tommy Williamson beat Barry Couper.

The semi finals were played over the best of 9 legs and saw Liam Sutherland progress through to the final following a 5-2 victory over Scott Williamson whist the second semi final Stuart Paul beat Tommy Williamson 5-0.

The final was played over the best of 11 legs, which saw Stuart take the opening leg before Liam went on to take the remaining legs hitting a 180 & 177 as well as a 118 checkout along the way to emerge a 6-1 winner and retain the Charlie “Zoom” Pottinger Memorial Shield. Thanks goes to the Sandwick Social Club for hosting the event, their barstaff and Shona Sandison for presenting the shield to the winner.

During the nights play 180’s were recorded from Arnold Brown, Clive Burgess x2, Kieran Fraser x2, John Dunnet, Scott Williamson x2, James McNab, Stuart Farmer, Stuart Paul x4, Gareth Pottinger, David Thomson, Tommy Williamson & Liam Sutherland.

High Checkouts were recorded from Ian Hannah 115, Stuart Paul 106, Tommy Williamson 110 & 111 and Liam Sutherland 118.

Next Saturday sees the SDA Mixed doubles take place in the Lerwick Legion, players to be registered by 7pm.
